What is the Southeastern Regional Conference?
Civil Engineering students from over 20 Southeast Region universities will attend the three day conference. These students will participate in
engineering-style competitions, each representing a civil engineering sub-discipline. The conference will feature two headline events:
the “Steel Bridge Competition”, in which scale model steel bridges are assembled and load-tested, and the “Concrete Canoe Competition”,
in which canoes are fabricated from high-performance concrete materials and raced in a nearby lake. The conference will also include competitions
in such areas as surveying, geotechnical engineering, plan reading, and transportation engineering.
In addition to satisfying the rigorous coursework requirements of a civil engineering degree, some students choose to participate in ASCE student
chapters of their respective universities. Membership in an ASCE student chapter provides for a stimulating social environment which facilitates
academic and professional success. In preparation for the annual conference, ASCE student members apply academic principles to engineering problems.
This interface fosters an understanding of the interdependence of academia and practice, and helps shape a well-balanced engineer who will someday
prove invaluable to an employer and/or client.
